Pushkin's Day: the history and traditions of the holiday

The 6th of June, the birthday of the great Russian poet and writer Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin has been unofficially considered as a "Pushkin's Day" since the 19th century. But officially it was first celebrated in 1999 - on the day of the 200th anniversary of the birth of a literary genius who laid the foundations and became a model of the modern Russian language.

Over time, Pushkin's Day was combined with another holiday - the Day of the Russian Language. It happened in 2011. The coincidence was not accidental. The celebration was supported at the highest level by a presidential decree.

Admirers of the writer's talent hold literary evenings, scientific conferences and festivals on this day. Literary museums and libraries usually hold thematic events: they arrange readings, carnivals and even balls. The date is most widely celebrated in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

How this day is celebrated in Ufa and Bashkortostan you can read in our site, the Cultural World of Bashkortostan.

“The cultural world” web portal is the only media to tell about Bashkir culture. It also highlights the achievements of famous people in the republic, tells about young artists.
